Head of Business and Corporate Practice
Ilya Zlatkin focuses his practice on helping both domestic and international entrepreneurs establish and develop their businesses. Prior to joining Ziliak Law in December 2015, Ilya started and operated his own law firm, practicing in areas of business strategy, intellectual property, entertainment law, nonprofit law, and international trade. Ilya also regularly volunteers through Lawyers for the Creative Arts. These experiences allow Ilya to relate to the vast majority of his clientele.
Relying on his fluency in Russian and proficiency in Spanish, Ilya has also counseled American entrepreneurs seeking to enter Eurasian and Latin American markets. Likewise, he has facilitated international investment into the United States from Eastern European nations, leveraging his professional and personal experiences with the region. Originally from Belarus, Ilya worked in St. Petersburg, Russia on projects related to customs regulations, endowments, and public-private partnerships.
In addition to helping clients develop nonprofit organizations, Ilya himself has been the driving force behind Russophonic Illinois – an organization focused simultaneously on business development projects relating to multiple Russian-speaking countries, as well as promotion of business ethics, compliance, fraud prevention, and anti-corruption efforts.
Ilya is a Certified Fraud Examiner, and has written extensively on issues relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. A regular contributor to the FCPA Blog, Ilya has had a history of deterring fraud. While still a law student, he interned at the Virginia Office of the Attorney General in the Antitrust and Consumer Litigation Section.
Ilya graduated cum laude from the University of Richmond School of Law. Before attending law school, Ilya graduated from the University of Virginia with a double-major in Economics and Foreign Affairs. He has been admitted to practice in Illinois and the District of Columbia.
